Present street standards in most communities require residential streets that are
overly wide, hot, and which result in potentially dangerous high speeds. These streets do not respect the neighborhoods
through which they travel.
Which street do you think has higher traffic speeds? Which street would you prefer to live on or walk down?
Smart growth creates streets that respect the neighborhoods through which they travel. Streets are narrower and tree-lined.
These kind of streets:
• Slow traffic
• Reduce heat buildup
• Are less costly to build and maintain
• Are more pleasant to live on, walk along, drive down . . .
• Help conserve farmland
Many older streets featured shade trees planted in a parkway between the curb and sidewalk. These neighborhoods are now
valued for their shade, beauty, and slower traffic.
